Brief
Tucked away in a quiet corner of a large country estate, this reading room and library was designed for a renowned novelist seeking a dedicated space for contemplation and research.
The room was conceived as a "knowledge sanctuary," where the client's extensive collection of first editions could be displayed with archival care. Functionally, the room needed to provide ergonomic comfort for long hours of reading and a layout that encouraged slow movement. The design intention focuses on the warmth of traditional pigments—specifically a deep terracotta lime-wash—reinterpreted through a clean, contemporary lens.
Concept
The Terracotta Study" is a concept built around Earth and Form. The walls are finished in a rich, siennatone plaster that creates a soft, velvety depth, changing intensity as the day progresses.
We installed floor-to-ceiling, industrial-style black steel shelving that provides a rigorous, modern framework for the organic textures of the books and woven storage baskets.
A pair of mid-century inspired lounge chairs in bentwood and woven seagrass offer a tactile, breathable seating option, paired with soft denim-blue cushions for a subtle color contrast. A low-profile, striped wool rug in olive and sage tones anchors the seating group, while a pleated silk floor lamp provides a soft, directional light perfect for afternoon study.
